AG’s Office to seek assistance from international attorneys to recover State funds

Attorney General’s Office has announced it is holding discussions with relevant government authorities to seek assistance from international attorneys to trace and recover missing State assets.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on the first day of his presidency, established Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery – charged with fulfilling his electoral pledge of recovering the State assets which went missing through corruption and embezzlement.

AG’s Office issued a statement last Sunday, reaffirming its commitment to the recovery of State assets. It said the work was a top priority to the office, and announced the intention of seeking assistance from international attorneys.

The office said it will use international expertise and attorneys to carry out the work of recovering the assets which are traced to foreign countries and returning it to Maldives.

AG’s Office, on January 15, announces it has shared documents with Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery and Maldives Police Service believed to be evidence of money laundering by former Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor.
