People’s Majlis has accepted the motion to allow President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) to take his oath of office on November 11 for consideration and formed a special seven-member committee for evaluation.

Lawmakers are divided over whether the President-elect should take his oath of office on November 11 or November 17.

Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed proposed forming a seven-member committee to further evaluate the issue this Sunday. And the proposal was seconded by Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz.

68 lawmakers voted in support of forming the committee and only one lawmaker voted against a committee.

The seven-member committee members are:

  1. Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam
  2. North Henveyru MP Abdulla Shahid
  3. Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed
  4. Kanditheemu MP Hussain Mohamed
  5. Mathiveri MP Mohamed Hussain
  6. Kelaa MP Ali Arif
  7. Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir

The committee was put to vote. And 68 lawmakers voted in favor and one lawmaker voted in abstinence in the sitting attended by 72 lawmakers.

Speaking during the debate on the motion earlier this Sunday morning, President-elect and Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said he did not want to give anyone the opportunity to be able claim he swore in to office unconstitutionally.

“I cannot condone giving anyone the opportunity to, later on, claim I took by oath of office as the President of the upcoming presidential term unconstitutionally,” said Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

He said he wished for a “decisive determination” should be made on the matter. And that he doesn’t want the decision made by the Majlis revisited later on by the Supreme Court.
