Amendments proposed by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) lawmakers to three laws failed to secure enough votes and were rejected by the People’s Majlis this Sunday.
The PPM lawmakers proposed amendments to:
Faresmaathodaa MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef proposed increasing the fee for parliamentary candidates to MVR 15,000. But the proposal failed when only 15 lawmakers voted in favor of it. 50 lawmakers voted against the proposal and one abstained.
The proposal by Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla to amend the section in the Criminal Procedure Code which details bribery, corruption and treason secured only one vote. 66 lawmakers voted against the proposal and one abstained.
And the proposal by Maavah MP Ahmed Azhan Fahmy to amend the Prisons and Parole Act and change the name Maldives Correctional Service to National Prison Service secured only two votes. 61 lawmakers voted against the proposal and five abstained.
