The pro-Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Twitter accounts were suspended because “the people creating unrest in Maldives in the name of democracy couldn’t swallow it”, says PPM.
First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim’s official Twitter account, the Twitter accounts of top PPM activists, and some other pro-President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and pro-PPM Twitter accounts have been suspended.
Speaking at a press conference held at PPM’s headquarters last Tuesday night, Kelaa MP Ali Arif said the Twitter accounts were suspended through a Sri Lankan company.
“Those that create unrest in the name of the name of democracy, those involved in this ruckus are unable to swallow it. They did this because these Twitter accounts publicize that the Maldives is peaceful and safe, that every visitor to Maldives is having a safe and enjoyable time,” said Arif.
Arif said authorities were receiving threats TVM’s and Channel 13’s satellites will be shut down within the next two days.
“The ruckus by those involved in the coup attempt and the situation of Maldives is clear to all. Maldives is a peaceful country. If it were so dangerous, then an international football match wouldn’t take place here,” said Arif.
PPM said the party was working on recovering the suspended accounts.
