Maldivian Rufiyaa and US dollars’ worth more over MVR 3 million has been found from a bag belonging to Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed Mohamed, says Maldives Police Service.
Speaking at a press conference held by MPS last Sunday night, the Police Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shifan said the police discovered USD 215,000 and MVR 150,000 in cash from a bag which belongs to Judge Ali Hameed.
“USD 215,000 and MVR 150,000 were found from a bag connected to Ali Hameed. And the investigation has uncovered former President Maumoon [Abdul Gayoom] has aided Ali Hameed’s family in various ways,” said Shifan.
He also said that the police have undisputable evidence Judge Ali Hameed purchased an apartment using bribe money, and that a Maldivian company provided him with a loan of USD 2.4 million.
“We have undisputable evidence Ali Hameed purchased an apartment using bribe money. And we have undisputable evidence a major business operating in Maldives provided Ali Hamee with a loan of USD 2.4 million,” said Shifan.
Judge Ali Hameed is accused of accepting bribe money and involvement in a conspiracy to overthrow the legitimate government.
He has been suspended by Judicial Services Commission.
Judge Ali Hameed and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed were arrested from the Supreme Court by military officers within hours the President invoked a State of Emergency in the country on February 5.
