Fisherman dies at sea outside R. Vaadhoo

A fisherman, who dove into the sea to catch bait, passed away due to oxygen deprivation in an incident just outside R. Vaadhoo, this Sunday morning.

The deceased fisherman has been identified as Ibrahim Shareef, 32, from Fuvahmulah City. He was working on the G. Dh. Faresmaathoda fishing boat "Laser 4".

The coordinator at Vaadhoo Health Center, Ahmed Zuhair said the fishing boat had been out looking for bait in a lagoon just outside Vaadhoo. He said Ibrahim Shareef had been dead when taken to the health center.

"Sun" has been informed Ibrahim Shareef had been in the water diving with two other crew members. And that he died after his oxygen cylinder ran out. He was found tangled with the net used to catch the bait, reported an informed source.

"Those in the water took him out of the water as soon as his body was found," said the source.

Shareef's body is currently being kept at the Vaadhoo Health Center. Crew members report his body is to be transported to his home island, Fuvahmulah City.

His death is being investigated by the police.
