5, including 2 councilors arrested from Saturday’s protest

Five people, including two councilors were arrested from the opposition’s demonstration in Male’ City on Saturday evening.

Saturday evening’s demonstration was organized by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Youth Wing. The five protestors were arrested from the crossroad between Majeedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu.

An eye witness reported to “Sun” that those arrested include President of G. Dh. Gadhdhoo Council, Rayyan Jamaal and A. A. Rasdhoo Council member Abdulla Anil. The other three arrestees are; President of MDP’s Youth Wing, Mikael Naseem, member of MDP’s Economic Committee, Safa’ath Ahmed, and MDP member and attorney, Sheena Mohamed.

The protestors called for the enforcement of the Supreme Court order issued on February 1, which called for immediate release and retrial of nine political leaders and immediate reinstatement of 12 parliamentarians.

The protestors had gathered at the crossroad between Majeedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu. SO police officers had intervened, pushing back the protestors to the pavements and confiscating their banners and sign boards.

Five protesters were arrested for alleged disobedience.

“Sun” was unable to contact the police media official for comment, despite repeated attempts.
