Elderly prisoners to be transferred to low security prison in Hulhumale

Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has decided to transfer non-violent prisoners and detainees who are above 50 years of age to the low security prison in Hulhumale’.

The low security prison, located in south-west Hulhumale’, was initially established to hold illegal immigrants and used to be superintended by police.

Media Coordinator of Home Ministry Thamzeel Abdul Samad told Sun Online that the Home Minister has decided to show leniency to the 71 prisoners across the country who are above the age of 50, and that the purpose of this decision is to allow them to spend the rest of their lives in a better environment.

The low security prison in Hulhumale includes a large compound where the elderly prisoners will be allowed to socialise with other prisoners, said Thamzeel.

He further said that two detainees over 50 who are presently at Dhoonidhoo Investigation Prison and Hulhumale’ Atholhuvehi, will also be transferred to the low security prison in Hulhumale’.

Home Ministry said that currently, there are 52 prisoners aged between 50 and 60, two prisoners aged between 60 and 65, two prisoners aged between 65 and 70, and 11 prisoners above the age of 70 in the Maldives.
