A man already facing possible charges for a separate sexual crime was arrested from central Maldives on Wednesday on suspicion of sexually abusing his pre-teen daughter.
In a statement on Thursday, a police spokesperson said that the sexual abuse of a nine-year girl in an island in central Maldives was reported to the agency on September 14.
The suspect in the case, a 32-year-old Maldivian male who the police said holds a position of authority over the victim, was arrested under court warrant on Wednesday.
The police said the same man was also investigated in a separate case by the agency.
The police had finished the investigation and forwarded it to the Prosecutor General’s Office for charges, said the spokesperson.
While the police haven’t disclosed the nature of the previous case against him or the relation between him and the victim in the second case, Sun has been informed through credible sources that the victim in the new case is his own daughter.
Meanwhile, the previous case against him is also for a sexual crime.
Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Offenders, which declares special provisions to deal with child sex offenders both at investigative and trial stages, prescribes a prison sentence of 15 to 18 years, if the person who carried out the offense holds a position of authority over the victim.
Those with information regarding crimes against children are urged to call the Maldives Police Service’s Family and Child Protection Department at 3000600 or the Ministry of Social and Family Development’s helpline 1412.
