MPL reports drop in cleared goods in late August

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has indicated a decrease in the number of goods processed in the past week.

According to statistics released by MPL on Thursday, the number of containers cleared by MPL decreased from August 24 to 30.

MPL cleared 553 20-foot containers and 403 40-foot containers during the period, while 743 20-foot containers and 594 40-foot containers were cleared from 17 to 23 of the month.

At the same time, the proportion of onions cleared, which are commonly used in cooking in Maldives, has also decreased. 11,617 sacks of onions were cleared from 24 to 30 last month while 16,777 sacks were cleared from 17 to 23 of the same month.

MPL cleared items last week:

  1. 14,540 boxes of egg

  2. 11,617 sacks of onion

  3. 5,415 sacks of carrot

  4. 5,647 sacks of garlic

  5. 3,672 sacks of tomato

  6. 1,819 sacks of pineapple

  7. 2,157 sacks of cabbage

  8. 2,087 bananas

  9. 806 sacks of pumpkin

  10. 539 sack sweet melon

The clearance of other commonly imported items such as egg, potato, banana, tomato, watermelon and pineapple also declined compared to the period from August 17 to 23.

It is noteworthy that Maldives is dependent on imports from other countries. The largest importers are the UAE, India, Singapore, China and Malaysia. Essential commodities like egg, onions and potato are usually imported from neighboring countries like India and Sri Lanka.

According to the latest MMA data, the inflation rate has been maintained at four percent.
