Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam states the current administration has installed more Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) than all its predecessors.

In an interview with state media, PSM, Minister Shiyam said the most FADs ever installed in a single year was achieved last year under the current administration. He added that the installation of even more FADs is in the pipeline for this year.

According to the Minister, this is a huge priority for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

“As this is strongly desired by the citizens, the President has regarded a high priority for it,” he said.

Minister Shiyam detailed that the current administration has installed 22 new FADs, with efforts underway to establish FAD centres in two Maldivian regions.

Minister Shiyam further stated that there is a strong demand for reef fisheries across various regions of the Maldives, and efforts are currently underway to install eight FADs in the southern part of the country to support this.

He also mentioned that the Ministry has identified islands with potential for sports fishing, where FAD installations are also planned.

According to the Minister, all FAD installations are undertaken by professionals.
