Man accused of scamming MVR 1 million in 12 cases arrested

A man accused of scamming MVR 1 million across 12 separate cases has been arrested.

The man has been identified as 29-year-old Shihan Shiyam, Daylight Villa, S. Feydhoo.

According to the Police, Shihan was arrested under a court order last Monday during an operation carried out jointly by the Anti-Scam Centre and S. Hithadhoo Police Station.

The operation was launched following numerous reports of individuals being defrauded through phone calls, with Shihan allegedly posing as a supplier of goods.

In this regard, the Police revealed that on June 30th, Shihan contacted a victim and scammed MVR 30,000 under the pretense of supplying goods.

Additionally, the Anti-Scam Centre is currently investigating him in connection with 12 cases of fraud, including instances of theft through compromised accounts.

Police noted that MVR 380,000 obtained through fraudulent means in these 12 cases had been circulated through Shihan’s account, adding that the total amount defrauded across all cases reaches MVR 1 million.

Shihan has been remanded in custody for 15 days. The case is under further investigation.
