On Sunday, the Criminal Court released the young man apprehended for reckless driving in Hulhumale’ and for failing to comply with police orders to stop.
A video circulating on social media shows police officers stopping a silver car near the beach area in Hulhumale’ Phase I, close to the bridge linking Phase I and Phase II. In the footage, traffic police are seen surrounding the vehicle before arresting a man and a woman.
The Police, on Sunday, disclosed the identity of the driver of the car involved in the high-speed chase as 18-year-old Aik Haisham Hassan, H. Filimaage, Male’. The authority noted that Aik did not hold a valid driver’s license.
Meanwhile, the woman arrested alongside him has been released from custody. Her identity was not disclosed.
Police told Sun on Sunday evening that Aik was released on conditional bail after being produced before the court for a decision on his remand. However, no further details were given.
In a message to the media on Saturday night, Police said the car failed to comply with a stop order in Hulhumale' and continued to speed through both phases of the suburb. It was noted that the vehicle intentionally collided with a police motorcycle that was pursuing it, causing the motorcycle to fall.
Police said two officers on the motorcycle fell as a result, one of whom sustained injuries.
Hulhumale’ Hospital said the injured officer has been discharged after treatment, with efforts underway to arrange a specialist consultation.
The case is under further investigation by the Police.
Reckless driving continues to be a serious issue in the Maldives, with numerous accidents—some fatal—attributed to it.
