A woman is camping in front of GA. Villingili Council in protest over the Council’s decision to revoke the list of applicants to applied for two row houses on the island and reopen applications.
A resident who spoke with Sun from the island said the woman camping in front of the Council building when councilors arrived for work at 8:30am this morning. In this regard, the resident detailed that she was lying down on a bed sheet she had spread in front Council building’s entrance with pillows. She had also placed an umbrella to shield herself from the sun.
A video of the woman is viral on social media. The video shows a water bottle and a shopping bag containing buns near her. Police officers are also seen at the scene.
Sun has learned that the woman is a native of Villingili. She is a mother to several children with special needs. Her own mother died when she was a child, and she now lives with her stepmother. She gave up the land plot she had previously been granted on the island after being included on the list of applicants for the row houses.
“When staff arrived at the office this morning, she had set up camp there with a bedsheet and pillows. Likely, she came there at 7:30am or so,” the resident said.
Speaking further, the resident said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigated a case related to the row houses developed on the island during the Council, in its previous term, adding the corruption watchdog had stopped the handover of the row houses following complaints from island residents.
Sun has learned that the incumbent Council, after assuming office, sought approval from Housing Ministry to proceed with matters related to the row houses – an approval which has yet to be granted.
