The Government of Pakistan has extended gratitude to United States President Donald Trump for his willingness to support efforts aimed at the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

Trump administration brokered a ceasefire between Indian and Pakistan after tensions rocketed between the two nations, including an exchange of missiles and drones last week, following an attack by unidentified gunmen which left 26 people dead, mostly Indian tourists, on April 22nd in India-administered Kashmir.

The US-mediated ceasefire between the two South Asian neighbors has remained in effect since last weekend.

The Government of Pakistan, in a statement, acknowledged with appreciation the constructive role played by the United States, and other friendly nations, in supporting the recent ceasefire understanding between Pakistan and India, which they described as a step towards de-escalation and regional stability.

Pakistani Government also extended appreciation with respect to Trump’s expressed willingness to support efforts aimed at the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which the government emphasized as a longstanding issue that has serious implications for peace and security in South Asia and beyond.

Trump has offered to work with India and Pakistan to achieve a “solution” for the long-disputed Kashmir region.

However, Pakistani Government reaffirmed that any just and lasting settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute must be in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and must ensure the realization of the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people, including their inalienable right to self-determination.

The Government reiterated its commitment to engaging with the United States and the international community in efforts to promote peace, security, and prosperity in the region.

“We also look forward to deepening our multifaceted partnership with the United States, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and economic cooperation,” the statement read.
