Dewatering efforts halted after clearing 16,911 tons of floodwater

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has temporarily halted efforts to dewater the flooded roads of Male’ City, after restoring normalcy in the Maldivian capital by clearing 16,911 tons of floodwater.

MNDF announced dewatering efforts were halted, owing to achieving normalcy in the Maldivian capital, this morning.

Via a post X, the authority said it cleared 16,911 tons of floodwater in the operation to dewater Male’ roads undertaken last night.

Non-stop heavy rainfall in Male’ on Saturday resulted in severe floods.  

Subsequently, MNDF began efforts to dewater the roads and provide sandbags to households prone to flooding on Saturday evening.

As part of this operation, MNDF provided assistance to 131 households in Male’ while 976 households were provided sandbags. The operation was also carried out in K. Hura, K. Guraidhoo, K. Himmafushi, K. Thulusdhoo, K. Maafushi and ADh. Maamilgi as the islands also faced serve flooding due to nonstop heavy rain.

Chief of Defense Force, Major General Ibrahim Hilmy visited some areas in Male’ to oversee the operation.

Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) stated that the severe weather across the Maldives is due to a circular system formed east of the country. This system is currently near the southern region of the Maldives, meaning the southern atolls can also expect rainfall.

Met Office predicts that the weather will improve by Tuesday.
