Man attacked with hammer outside IGMH; police officer injured attempting to intervene

Two people driving by on a motorcycle attacked a man waiting outside a hospital in Male’ City with a hammer on Tuesday, injuring both him and a police officer who attempted to intervene to stop the attack.

The incident, which took place outside the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in the Kanbaa Aisa Rani Hingun, was reported to the police at around 08:41 pm on Tuesday.

According to the police, the victim, identified as a Maldivian male, sustained injuries in the attack and was taken to the IGMH for treatment.

Meanwhile, a police officer who attempted to intervene to protect him sustained an injury to his elbow.

The police have yet to make an arrest, but said they are investigating the case.

The case came after a fight broke out inside the kitchen of a café located on the Maaveyo Magu of Male’ City earlier on Tuesday, leaving two expatriate workers – the café’s cook – a Nepalese male – and a kitchen helper – a Bangladeshi male – injured.

The Bangladeshi worker is reported to be in serious condition.

The police have received reports of at least 64 cases of assault so far this year.
