The major power outage in a large part of Hulhumale’ on Saturday night resulted from damage to a high-voltage cable during excavation works for a housing project, says the State Electric Company (STELCO).

Power went out in a large part of Hulhumale’ Phase I and Phase II at around 11:00 pm on Saturday.

In a post on X on Sunday morning, STELCO apologized for the disruption in power services to the thousands of people who live in Hulhumale’.

STELCO said that the outage resulted from damage to a high-voltage cable during excavation works on one of Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC)’s housing projects.

The state utility provider urged those working in areas where electricity cables are installed to be more vigilant so as to avoid disrupting public services and inconveniencing the public.

STELCO previously said the outage resulted from a tripped feeder. The damage to the high-voltage cable was discovered as the company’s workers checked the cables to identify the reason why the feeder tripped.

The power was restored after an outage that lasted approximately one hour.
