Thief who tried to steal from transformer and assaulted STELCO staff identified

Maldives Police Service has arrested the man accused of stealing from a transformer located near the bridge at Reethigas Magu in Hulhumale’ Phase II and assaulting a STELCO staff who tried to intercept him. 

The suspect has been identified as Ibrahim Zalif, 37, Chanbeylee, Sh. Bilehfah.

According to the Police, he was arrested at approximately 21:43pm last night.

The case is under further investigation by the authority.

STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahumy said two thieves attempted to steal from the transformer last night. One was stopped and handed over to the Police while the other fled the scene, he added. 

Fahumy further said the transformers installed in Hulhumalé Phase II were not part of the company’s projects, adding these premises lacked CCTVs. As such, he noted that efforts were underway to install CCTVs at the premises in collaboration with HDC.
