Following warnings from Maldives Meteorology on expected bad weather in the coming days, Male’ City Council has begun taking precautions.

In a post on X, the council said that it has established a special crisis committee after the weather authority forecast heavy rainfall for major parts of the Maldives for the next few days.

The City Council said that it would begin installing sand bag barriers in venues most likely to get affected from flooding.

MET Office on Sunday said that the cyclonic circulation in Bay of Bengal is likely to move westwards in the coming days, which is expected to cause heavy rainfall in northern and central parts of the Maldives accompanied by thunder, strong winds and sea swells.

According to MET, the weather is expected to worsen from January 13th to 18th.

Last Friday, Male’ City experienced heavy rainfall that continued for hours causing significant floods in the roads resulting in damages to residences and shop outlets. Individuals in 44 affected homes had to be evacuated to temporary shelter.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Sunday reported that the impacted families have all returned back to their homes.
