NDMA assess damage of 112 Male’ area houses after heavy rainfall

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has assessed the damages to 112 out of 141 affected homes in Male’ area following Friday’s heavy rainfall.

The heavy rainfall, that started on Friday afternoon and continued into evening had resulted in the capital city getting flooded with multiple homes being affected. The damages to homes also resulted in 226 individuals from 36 severely affected homes being relocated to temporary shelters for a one-day period.

NDMA began its damage assessment of the affected homes on Saturday.

The authority said that since it began the assessment, it had completed the assessment of 112 out of the 141 homes that reported of being affected while 13 residences reported they did not wish for an NDMA damage assessment.

NDMA further said that assessments of 16 other homes remain pending owing to various factors, which would be completed by the end of tomorrow.

NDMA is joined by the Ministry of Social and Family Development and the Maldivian Red Crescent in the efforts.

Besides Male’ City, several islands reported of various degrees of damage to their infrastructure. NDMA said that it was working with the respective island councils to assess the damage of these islands as well.

More than 500 venues reported of flooding following Friday’s rainfall, while the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) provided assistance to a total of 774 venues, out of which 554 were requests to install sand-bag barriers against flood waters.

Additionally, 53 homes reported interruption to their necessities. NDMA did rapid assessments of these venues, and provided temporary shelter to 226 individuals to 36 homes out of this.
