226 people from Male’ provided temporary shelter and food

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) states 226 residents from 36 homes in Male’ City have been provided temporary shelter and food in light of the heavy flooding in the Maldivian capital on Friday due to nonstop heavy rain.

Via a post on X on Saturday, NDMA said authorities received reports from 500 locations following flood intrusion. Authorities also received requests for assistance from 774 locations due to flooding, of which 554 requests were seeking assistance in placing sandbags.

According to NDMA, rapid assessments were conducted at 53 homes after residents reported being obstructed from their basic living needs due to flooding. A total of 226 people from 36 of these homes were provided temporary shelter and food as their residences were not tenantable at the time.

As Maldives experiences a bad weather spell, damages caused by severe floods were reported from eight islands as well. They include:

  • F. Nilandhoo: 80 percent of the island was flooded
  • Dh. Kudahuvadhoo: Some 10 homes recorded damage
  • Dh. Meedhoo: Some 10 homes recorded damage
  • F. Magoodhoo: Nine homes recorded damage of which residents of one were relocated to temporary shelter
  • K. Guraidhoo: 60 homes recorded damage to various extent
  • F. Feeali: Residents of one home relocated to temporary shelter
  • K. Himmafushi: 60 percent of homes flooded

Notably, R. Inguraidhoo and Sh. Narudhoo recorded significant damage after swell waves swept in the islands during high tide.
