Maldives Police Service has arrested a local man in possession of three liquor bottles on Sunday evening.
The individual was arrested following a special operation of the police service.
On Sunday evening, a video clip went viral on social media platforms that showed an individual being apprehended after dropping him on the pavement of Majeedhee Magu.
In response to questions regarding the video, police said they conducted a special operation after receiving intelligence of liquor peddling, and confirmed they stopped, questioned and arrested a local man during the operation.
The authority confirmed the identity of the suspect, one Mohamed Azham Saeed, 33 years, and originally from Gaafu Dhaal Gadhdhoo.
Upon inspection, police discovered three bottles of liquor from under the seat of the motorbike he was riding.
Police said they are now investigating the case.
Cases of liquor peddling and consumption by both locals and expatriates during the new year celebrations has been reported in previous years while such incidents have been reported from both Male’ City and other islands.
During Sunday afternoon, three expatriates were arrested with liquor bottles as well.
Police have launched a special operation ahead of the new year celebrations as cases of liquor and drug peddling and consumption are expected to increase.
