Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has demanded awarding plots under Binveriya social housing scheme to the rightful recipients.
The main opposition party alleged Housing Development Corporation (HDC) had fraudulently awarded plots to several unlisted individuals favored by the current management.
MDP in a statement issued on Wednesday evening raised concerns regarding the social housing scheme, in which it said this revelation highlights rampant corruption in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
The party further claimed that despite several crucial details regarding the case coming to light, the lack of any action against the senior HDC management was evident of the current administration’s complacency towards corruption and theft.
MDP further demanded sacking HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, who was appointed to the role at ministerial level by President Muizzu. Besides this, the party alleged such large-scale corruption cannot be executed by an individual acting alone, and demanded stringent action against everyone who were involved.
The opposition party also expressed concerns over the inaction of law enforcement bodies and independent institutions in taking measures against widespread corruption across government agencies and state-owned enterprises under the current regime.
MDP called for prompt action against everyone involved in stealing public assets, and assured it would do everything in its capacity to thwart any potential attempts by the current government from ‘stealing’ affordable housing from its rightful owners.
The Binveriya Scheme issue has surfaced along with serious allegations of HDC awarding plots to people not listed among the recipients.
The opposition party has already submitted a motion to the parliament in relation to the case.
Documents received to ‘Sun’ Online indicate Fazul’s brother, Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, who is also the Deputy Managing Director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) was among the names in the list of awardees despite not being eligible.
