Parliament goes to recess after completing 73 percent of works

Parliament, on Thursday, concluded the last sitting of the last term of this year and subsequently, broke for recess.

While concluding Thursday’s sitting, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla said the Parliament completed 73.3 percent of its work during the final term of the year.

“The Parliament undertook crucial work during this term as well. A total of 27 sittings were held and 67 hours were spent in total for parliamentary sitting. Looking at Committee works, a total of 165 meetings were held. The Committee meetings spanned 118 hours,” he detailed

Additional work completed:

  • 20 bills
  • One resolution
  • 13 motions filed by the government
  • Five motions put forth by the lawmakers
  • Four emergency motions  
  • 13 questions for ministers
  • Seven reports related to other matters

The Speaker extended gratitude to the lawmakers for the work they have undertaken during the term and expressed hope for the next term to be a productive term where constructive work is carried out.

Notable amendments passed during the third term include amendments to the constitution which introduced anti-defection provisions that will result in MPs losing their seats for switching political parties. 

The first parliamentary term of next year will commence in February.
