Ruling PNC’s North Hulhumale’ MP Hussain Shareef states youths entering the society after graduating from school should be given military training to empower them and ensure they are individuals beneficial to society.
While speaking during the debate on the bill to amend the Sports Act at Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting, Shareef raised the question as to what benefit has been achieved by children of all ages, especially the current youth generation, falling to drug addiction.
Thus, he stressed the need to pave roads for such children to have a future, adding the country fell to its current state due to the failure of former administrations to pave these roads.
Shareef underscored the need to change the whole system and in this trajectory, cited military training as crucial to properly empower the youth. He noted that youths who had previously received military training remained true to the nation when the time struck for them to fulfill their responsibilities.
“I especially want youths with discipline to be included among this as we look to properly empower youths and wish for their success in sports. We must ensure that any youth who comes to serve the Maldivian state is backed by proper military training via necessary legal frameworks,” he said.
This, he said, will pave the way to build a peaceful society and a successful generation that is faithful and respectful towards the nation.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced a national service program during a function held to mark the Victory Day. According to him, youth who lack prospects for further education or employment will be enlisted to the Maldives Police Service and the MNDF starting next year.
He said that 1,000 individuals will be enlisted to the MNDF and another 1,000 to the Police Service each year.
The President stated that the initiative will help steer youths who have finished school but lack opportunities for further education or employment away from harmful behaviors like drug addiction and crime.
