Republican nominee Donald Trump declared on Wednesday that he and his supporters had made history in the White House race, claiming victory over Democratic challenger Kamala Harris in the US presidential election.
The win would mark a stunning political comeback, four years after he left the White House.
"We've made history for a reason tonight, and the reason is going to be just that we overcame obstacles that nobody thought possible," Trump told jubilant supporters in Florida. "It's a political victory that our country has never seen before."
Thanking the American people for the “extraordinary honour of being elected 47th president”, Trump said: “This is a magnificent victory for the American people”.
Fox News declared Trump the winner of the US presidential election early Wednesday — the only network to make the call.
Other news outlets had yet to call the race for Trump, but he appeared on the verge of winning after capturing the battleground states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia and holding leads in the other four, according to Edison Research.
Trump has so far secured 267 electoral votes while Harris has won 224.
Harris did not speak to her supporters, who had gathered at her alma mater Howard University. Her campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, briefly addressed the crowd after midnight, saying Harris would speak publicly on Wednesday.
