Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel states International Day for the Eradication of Poverty serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to address the systemic barriers and discrimination that perpetuate poverty.

He made the remark via post on X on the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty annually marked on October 17th.

In his post, the Minister underscored the importance of collaboratively working to challenge and change the root causes and structures that marginalize vulnerable communities.

In this trajectory he urged everyone to commit to fostering inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

“Together, we can foster a society that values justice, peace, and inclusion for all,” he added.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty originated in 1987 when a massive gathering in Paris proclaimed poverty as a violation of human rights. United Nations General Assembly declared October 17th as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty through a resolution adopted on December 22, 1992.

This year’s theme for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is ‘Ending social and institutional maltreatment acting together for just, peaceful and inclusive societies’.
