Elections Commission (EC) has resumed efforts to dissolve Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).
The Commission revealed it had commenced efforts to dissolve MRM pursuant to Article 30 (a) of the Political Parties Act via an announcement on the government gazette on Tuesday.
Article 30 (a) of the Political Parties states High Court can order the dissolution of a political party after reviewing a case submitted by EC or a private individual.
EC’s announcement request to submit matters related to pending debts of MRM if any, to the party’s office before November 10th.
EC decided to dissolve the MRM for failure to bring up its membership to 3,000, as mandated by law, after giving a three-months’ notice.
MRM logged a case with Civil Court over the decision which on February 12th, ruled that EC’s decision was unlawful. EC subsequently appealed the decision to the High Court.
EC, in August, again announced its decision to dissolve MRM.
The Political Parties Act requires a political party to have a minimum of 3,000 members. As of April 19th, MRM had 2,231 members.
