A total of 37 people are in distress following Monday afternoon’s fire in the building where ‘Gaamagu Café’ is located.

Via a post on X, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) detailed that 22 Maldivians and 15 foreigners are in distress and therefore, the authority was undertaking efforts to provide humanitarian aid for them.

In an earlier comment, NDMA said a total of 56 people were evacuated to safety in light of the fire which included 50 foreigners and six Maldivians. The authority noted that efforts were underway to provide temporary housing for those in need.

The fire was reported to authorities at approximately 14:47pm late Monday afternoon.

In a message to the media regarding the fire, MNDF said two women were taken to ADK Hospital for treatment following the incident. One of them, a 30-year-old migrant has now been discharged, said MNDF citing the hospital, adding the other’s condition, who is a 48-year-old Maldivian woman, is also improving.

The building has been damaged beyond use in the fire. Reporters on-site also confirmed it took a considerable amount of time for authorities to control the fire, resulting in significant damage to the building and another next to it.
