Toriq resigns as deputy leader of PNC’s parliamentary group

Ahmed Toriq (Tom) has stepped down from his post as the deputy leader of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s parliamentary group.

Toriq, who represents the Mahibadhoo constituency, tendered his resignation on Sunday.

However, the exact reason for the decision is unclear.

Several PNC lawmakers confirmed Toriq’s resignation. However, the parliamentarian himself was not immediately available for comment.

A top political from PNC told Sun that Toriq’s resignation wasn’t motivated by a political reason. However, he did not specify a reason for the decision.

Toriq, along with Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid and Vilimale’ MP Mohamed Ismail, were elected as deputy leaders of PNC’s parliamentary group on May 22, as recommended by the party’s leader, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Toriq is among the most senior members of the incumbent 20th parliamentary assembly. He is among the five lawmakers who must stand in for the deputy speaker if they are indisposed of.

Toriq, a former national football star, has been serving at the Parliament since 2014. He is also campaigning to get elected as the president of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).
