Maldivian man arrested from Hulhumale’ for violence

Maldives Police Servies, on Thursday, announced the arrest of a Maldivian man from Hulhumale’ Phase I for violence.

The man – a 22-year-old Maldivian – was arrested under a court order on July 8th.

The case is under investigation by the Police.

Cases of violence are prevalent in not only Hulhumale’, but Male’ as well. Most such cases involve criminal gangs.

Speaking at a TV show last week, Superintendent of Police Arif there are currently eight criminal gangs active in the Maldivian capital, with most of the members aged 12-13 years.

Home Minister Ali Ihusan has said there are some 400 juveniles with links to criminal gangs, who require immediate intervention.

The establishment of a dedicated unit to combat gang crime is included in Maldives Police Service's new strategic action plan.
