Police states Mohamed Azmeel Jaleel, 38, who was injured as police officers arrested him, sustained his injuries after falling from a window, adding he was taken to Police Custodial before the hospital.
Police released a statement in connection to the incident on Wednesday which read that Azmeel requested some time to get ready when officers went to his residence to arrest him at 14:15pm on Monday. They detailed that Azmeel was injured after falling as he attempted to flee from a window on the first floor of the residence.
As per the Police, Azmeel sustained injuries to his head in the fall, among other injuries. He was first taken to Police Custodial in Male’ City where he was examined by a medical officer, said the Police, adding his transfer to the hospital came subsequently.
Azmeel is current being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
In an earlier comment, Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Shifan the suspect’s family had shared their concerns with the authority regarding the officers’ conduct in making their arrest, and had requested Police Professional Standards Command, National Integrity Commission and Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) to review the incident.
