Emergency motion urging Fenaka corruption probe

Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has submitted an emergency motion during Wednesday's parliament sitting urging a probe on Fenaka Corporation's corruption.

While some of the biggest corruption allegations were levied on Fenaka Corporation during the former administration, its senior management had denied them.

At Wednesday's parliament sitting, South-Feydhoo MP from PNC Ibrahim Didi had submitted the emergency motion, seeking an immediate investigation into the utility provider's alleged corruption.

The motion was accepted at the sitting with 67 votes.

In the motion, Didi said the top brass of Fenaka Corporation have been alleged with multiple acts of corruption during preceding governments, and argued this had impeded its services provided to the consumers.

He also said the emergency motion was submitted to bring the matter to the state's attention, and learn about the state's intended plan of action towards the corruption allegation.

The MP also argued Fenaka was strongly mired in corruption, putting it into a debt crisis during the previous government. Didi claimed the state suffered losses since it had to inject funds to the corporation.

"It's not just one company [we are talking about], it's the same with Road [Development] Corporation, while Fenaka owes MVR 2 billion to STO, but not a single payment has been issued so far since 2019," Didi said.

The MP further said Fenaka Corporation's former management is culpable for the corruption, and should be held accountable. He also demanded to summon former Fenaka Managing Director Ahmed Saeed for questiniong as well.

"The setbacks Fenaka facing right now is all because of the irresponsibility from the top management working with the former MD, and we need to look into this," he added.

Other PNC members who debated on the motion had all coincided on launching an investigation into Fenaka's corruption as well.
