Male' City Mayor Adam Azim on Thursday said, the renovation and upgrades of 'Aasaharaa' - that houses the 'Aasaharaa' mosque and the city's primary cemetery - will be completed by August, and the project will incur MVR 10.5 million.

At the Thursday press conference held to provide latest updates about the mosque and cemetery's ongoing development, Azim highlighted the significant expenditure incurred for the project.

The council expended over MVR 3 million on the first contractor, that took the job, while the second contractor was awarded MVR 5 million.

Haiman Construction Private Limited, that took over for finishing works of the mosque cemetary, was awarded another MVR 2.7 million.

"The contractor tasked with structure works weren't doing a good job, so we had them taken off the project, with a second contractor assigned to complete the initiative."

"We needed to seek a third contractor, since the project was first awarded without the finishing component included on the scope. So, we had to hire a third-party for the component separately," Azim added.

Earlier, Male' City Council in May, awarded Haiman Construction to complete the mosque and cemetery's finishing works within two months.

Azim however, said the finishing component of the project has now been stretched until August end.

He further said the project faced challenges as it was commenced before the full schematics of the project were completed. The mayor added this necessitated amendments to the schematics amid physical works of the initiative, that in turn posed difficulties for the contractor.

Once the modernization of the mosque is completed, the venue will feature;

  • Praying area specifically for women on the first floor
  • Ambulance entry relocated to the cemetery's rear gate
  • Development of three lounges atop funeral house - each able to accommodate 35 people
  • Each lounge will feature two toilets and designated areas for breathfeeding mothers
  • Special lavatory for persons with special needs
