10 COVD-19 cases reported this month

Health Protection Agency (HPA) states 10 COVID-19 cases have been reported so far this month.

Statistics shared with Sun by HPA show that COVID-19 cases peaked this year in January, with 44 cases.

The numbers decreased in February and March with four and three cases respectively.

However, an increase in cases was observed in April, which continued onto May. A total of 12 COVID-19 cases were reported in April. With 10 cases reported so far into May, the number is expected to climb further.

As Maldives is currently experiencing nationwide rain, there has been a sharp increase in mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue and Chikungunya.

However, cases relating to viral fever, cold and influenza have decreased as per HPA statistics.

The first known case of COVID-19 was identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Maldives has recorded almost 200,000 COVID-19 cases since the first known case in the nation in 2020. Hundreds have also succumbed to the disease.
