Guraidhoo stabilizes post floods

Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo, which reported significant damages last Monday due to floods, has been stabilizing, said the Deputy President of the island's council Ibrahim Shaleez.

Earlier on Monday, the island's council reported families in six residences were shifted to temporary shelters due to the floods, which was the result of heavy rainfall on the eve before.

Shaleez on Wednesday, confirmed all the families have returned back to their homes some time on Tuesday.

The families were provided temporary shelters from various guesthouses in Guraidhoo.

The council's deputy earlier said raining had begun around 19:30hrs on Monday evening, and continued until 22:00hrs on the same evening.

Shaleez had also said over 50 houses were noted for receiving varying degrees of impact due to the floods.

He recalled a similar crisis back in December 31st, 2023 due to heavy rainfall, with damages to multiple houses. But the recent flooding had been comparatively more devastating, Shaleez added.

The islands locals, MNDF, and council had worked together to drain the water out of the island, which they achieved around 01:00hrs on Tuesday early hours.

Maldives is experiencing bad weather conditions lately, with rainfall, rough seas and strong winds reported across the country.

So far, there have been few cases of flooding due to rain reported as well, including damages for 40 houses in Addu atoll Feydhoo recently.
