The Democrats has rescinded its endorsement to two of the party's candidates ahead of the parliamentary election scheduled for April 20th, 2024.

The party decided to rescind endorsement to its candidate Leela Ibrahim running for Thaa atoll Guraidhoo seat and Fathimath Zilma running for Thimarafushi seat of the same atoll.

According to The Democrats, it decided to revoke its support for the two after the candidate publicly endorsed the other candidates running for the respective constituencies.

President of The Democrats Hassan Latheef spoke with 'Sun' on Tuesday, confirmed the party's decision since the two candidates had endorsed government-affiliated candidates.

"The party would revoke its endorsement when the candidates decide to endorse other candidates, that too after contending for the party tickets," Hassan said.

Zilma announced her endorsement of independent candidate Ahmed Riyaz, who reportedly has the current government's backing despite a candidate from ruling PNC contending for the seat.

Leela had announced her support for PNC candidate Hanan Mohamed Rasheed for Guraidhoo seat as well.

While Leela stepped back from contending for Thimarafushi seat, the main opposition MDP has not fielded a candidate for the consituency as well.

At the 19th parliament assembly, the constituency was represented by current Minister of Defense Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon.

PPM enjoys majority in Thimarafushi constituency, making it unlikely for opposing parties to field candidates for the seat.
