An inmate at the Hulhumale’ Prison has died in a hospital in Male’.
Ahmed Ijaz, 44, Windmaage, R. Maduvvari, had been serving a three-year prison sentence at the Hulhumale’ Prison on drug charges.
In a statement announcing the death on Sunday night, Maldives Correctional Service said Ijaz was taken to the Hulhumale’ Hospital on March 8, after he had trouble breathing. He was treated at the hospital’s Emergency Room, before getting transferred to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male’ the next day.
According the Correctional Service, Ijaz was a tuberculosis (TB) patient, and was admitted to IGMH’s Intensive Care Unit after his condition worsened. His condition further deteriorated, and he was later treated on a ventilator.
He was pronounced dead at around 11:30 pm on Sunday.
According to the Correctional Service, Ijaz had been taken to Hulhumale’ Prison on March 7.
The Correctional Service said that Ijaz’s death was immediately notified to his family, Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and National Integrity Commission.
