Police deny allegations claiming an officer assaulted a minor

Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, have denied the viral allegations on social media claiming an officer assaulted a minor.

The family of a girl below the age of 18 protested near Hulhumale’ Phase II’s Police Station on Monday night claiming the girl had been assaulted by a officer.

Many had expressed enragement over the allegations on social media. However, Police, on Tuesday, denied assaulting anyone.

Police explained that the girl was injured after falling from a motorcycle during an attempt to flee a vehicle checkpoint.

“The incident was a result of falling from a motorcycle while attempting to evade the officers at a vehicle checkpoint in Hulhumale’ Phase II at approximately 22:05pm last night by accelerating the motorcycle upon met with the checkpoint,” Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said in a post on X on Tuesday.

Shifan identified the driver as an individual who did not hold a license, adding those injured in the incident were treated at Hulhumale’ Hospital last night.
