Entrepreneurs: Unlikely there will be a watermelon shortage this Ramadan

Entrepreneurs running stalls in the Local Market report it is unlikely there will be a shortage of watermelon this Ramadan.

Watermelon is one of the most in-demand and popular commodities during Ramadan.

While watermelon is available at most stalls in the Local Market – one kilo is priced between MVR 17 and MVR 20.

An entrepreneur from one of the stalls who spoke with Sun said it is unlikely there will be a shortage of watermelon during this Ramadan.

Most entrepreneurs reported that the watermelons sold in their stalls have been procured from AA. Thooddoo and Th. Kandoodhoo – two islands well-known for its watermelon produce.

Breadfruit was the commodity that was most widely available next to watermelon in the market on Monday, priced between MVR 30 to MVR 40 per breadfruit at most stalls.

Although lemon prices hiked last week – it is now available at MVR 70 per kilo.

Oranges are priced at MVR 7, while the prices of coconut vary between MVR 35 and MVR 50.

Meanwhile, renowned chili from Kandoodhoo is priced at MVR 75 per 100 gram while a kilo is priced between MVR 700 and MVR 800.

A cucumber kilo is priced between MVR 30 to MVR 35 while a carrot kilo is priced at MVR 35.

A banana kilo is priced at MVR 40 while a lettuce kilo is priced at MVR 80.
