Average of 150 accidents at Hulhumale' in 2 months

Maldives Police Service recorded an average of 150 accidents in the past two months at Hulhumale' Phase I and Phase II.

At the press conference held on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police Rajunee Shuaib said all major roads of Hulhumale' are frequent accident locations owing to rising population.

Hulhumale' police also receive multiple reports of reckless driving regularly, Rajunee added. She said authorities have begun to stop and tow speeding vehicles, and added same measures will be taken in the future as well.

Rajunee also highlighted the root cause for the alarming increase in accidents due to the disregard towards traffic regulations. She added speeding and taking U-turns on roads where it is not allowed are among the most frequent violations.

Greater Male' region observes the highest number of accident per annum in the Maldives.

Statistics also show the second most reported cases in 2023 third quarter were related to roadside accidents, with 1,116 cases reported during the quarter.

Out of the total 606 accidents were lodged with the police and probed while 549 cases completed investigation, however only one was filed for prosecution.
