Speaker Mohamed Aslam has announced plans to arrange housing for the administrative staff at the Parliament.
The Parliament held its staff night on Friday. Addressing the gathering, Aslam said that the legislative body’s administrative staff remained sidelined, as other institutions provided housing for their staff.
Aslam said he believes the Parliament must take the initiative to provide housing to its staff.
“Not the government or a specific government institution… I believe the Parliament must make this arrangement,” he said.
Aslam said that the Parliament, under the advisement of secretary general Fathimath Niusha and other administrative staff, will formulate a plan for that purpose.
Aslam also acknowledged the concern among administrative staff over the lack of pay increment, and expressed happiness at the 20 percent pay hike implemented in January.
“But I still don’t believe you are being properly renumerated for your hard work,” he said.
