Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has urged the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to take the lead on reforming global governance.

He made the appeal while delivering remarks at the ministerial meeting of NAM held in Kampala, Uganda on Wednesday.

In his remarks, Minister Zameer described NAM as a beacon of hope that has withstood ideological divides, geopolitical shifts, and unprecedented crises. He emphasized the challenges posed by modern complexities and urged Member States to adapt and fortify the movement's relevance on the international stage. He further recognized the crucial need to revitalize NAM in the face of new and emerging challenges of the globalized world and proposed three key suggestions on this front.

In this trajectory, he called for an overhaul of the existing working methods of the movement and stressed the importance of forming weighted and systematic discussions that extend beyond traditional issues.

He also called on NAM to take the lead on reforming global governance, including the reform of the United Nations and its principal organs.

NAM, incepted in 1961, is a group of 120 countries that are not aligned with, or against any major power blocs. Maldives became a member of the movement in 1976.
