MVR 400,000 in aid to 70 flood-hit Male’ homes

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said that over MVR 400,000 will be distributed as financial aid to 70 homes affected by the extensive flooding following torrential rain in Male’ City earlier this week.

In a statement on X on Wednesday, the NDMA announced that the government has decided to provide MVR 457,242 in financial aid to flood-affected homes.

NDMA said that 32 homes sustained MVR 248,381 in structural damages.

Meanwhile, household items in 65 homes were damaged beyond repair, resulting in MVR 1,044,304 in damages. NDMA said the homes will receive MVR 208,861.60 as financial aid, at the rate of 20 percent.

The household items damages include refrigerators, beds, cabinets and fans.

NDMA said their received 164 calls reporting flood damage. And that 42 people were moved to temporary shelters.

The authority also provided 10,100 sacks of sand to prevent flood water from seeping into homes, and spent MVR 179,275 on first response.

Torrential rain and thunderstorms on Sunday resulted in extensive flooding in not just Male’ City, but also K. Guraidhoo.

Maldives has been experiencing bad weather since last week, due to the onset of the Northeast Monsoon (Iruvai Monsoon).

The national weather forecast service said the bad weather has been exacerbated by a low-pressure area formed over the Arabian Sea.
