Former transport minister Aishath Nahula has announced her candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

In a post on X on Monday night, the Jumhoory Party (JP) deputy leader said she is contesting for the South Hulhumale’ seat on behalf of her party.

“I hope all beloved constituents will support and vote for me,” she said.

Nahula, the spouse of JP leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim, had been new to politics prior to her appointment as a member of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s cabinet.

She had backed Qasim against Solih in the first round of the presidential elections in September. JP had decided against backing either candidate in the runoff.

JP has held talks with both the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) and main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) regarding the upcoming elections.

Nahula is part of the five-member council appointed by JP to decide on the elections.
