The Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has passed an increment in the salaries of parliamentarians, which will see them earn MVR 100,000 monthly, with committee allowance.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the committee had initially deliberated on raising the salary of the speaker to MVR 90,000, the salary of deputy speaker to MVR 88,000, and the salary of other parliamentarians to MVR 82,000 – including a basic salary of MVR 57,000 and a living allowance of MVR 25,000.

But after deliberations, the committee decided to lower the basic salary to MVR 55,000, decreasing the total salary to MVR 80,000.

Therefore, with the MVR 20,000 committee allowance that parliamentarians receive, they will receive MVR 100,000 monthly.

The MVR 49.8 billion state budget passed last week includes an allotment of MVR 500 million for a pay raise for government employees.
