The main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) says that one of their lawmakers – Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau – has received a death threat.

In a statement on Monday night, MDP said it condemns death threats against lawmakers for the opinions they express and the work they do at the Parliament.

The party called on the police to investigate and take action in the case.

“Given that the highest responsibility of an opposition political party at the Parliament is to hold the government accountable, the Maldivian Democratic Party is deeply concerned that parliamentarians are subjected to death threats and made victim to such an atrocious crime for fulfilling this constitutional responsibility,” said the MDP.

The party called on security services to ascertain the safety of all lawmakers, noting that they are entitled to security and protection by law.

The police were not immediately available for comment regarding the case.

The threat comes after Shifau called on the Parliament to impeach President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
