The parliament has decided to extend the ongoing third session until December 28th.

This marks the third extension to the third session of this year.

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam proposed to extend the session as approval for the new administration’s ministerial cabinet remains pending. Although scheduled on the agenda today, the motion was sent back to the committee, citing its report was incomplete.

The extension of the parliament’s third session till December 28th was passed with the unanimous votes of 64 members.

The last extension, set to expire today, was approved on December 6th. Before that, the first extension, which expired on December 7th, was approved on November 27th.

Parliamentary sittings during a large portion of the third session had been stalled over the disagreements prompted by the no-confidence motion filed against former speaker Mohamed Naheed.

The no-confidence motion had been purposely stalled from proceeding by nitpicking various regulations of the parliament. MDP sought to resolve the deadlock through Supreme Court which ultimately decided that the no-confidence motion had been stalled unlawfully.

Nasheed tendered his resignation when the parliament attempted to proceed with the no-confidence motion following the judgment.
