Siyam warns of urgent need for solutions to ensure sustainability of fisheries sector

Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)’s leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed warned on Sunday that there is an urgent need to provide solutions to the issues and concerns raised by various stakeholders, in order to ensure the sustainability of the Maldives fisheries sector.

In an address on occasion of the Fishermen’s Day, Siyam stressed that fishing is a profession that dates back centuries, and holds a special place in the hearts of the Maldivian people.

The incumbent Meedhoo MP said that fishing is the lifeline of the Maldives, and a sector that scores of Maldivian families depend on, as a source of income.

He said that the Fishermen’s Day is therefore an opportune time to identify and listen to the complaints and concerns of fishermen, and provide solutions.

Siyam said that he finds it important to provide quick solutions in order to ensure the sustainability of the Maldives fisheries sector.

“Today, the greatest problem facing Maldives is the issues with weighing the fish and the lack of fair price. A quick solution to this critical issue is needed for the sustainable development of the fisheries sector,” he said.

Siyam thanked President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for the initiative taken by his administration to address the issues facing fishermen.

He urged fishermen to cooperate with the government to solve the issues they face and work to develop the fisheries sector.

He also urged industry stakeholders to explore new markets, increase fish products, and improve the position of Maldivian fish products in the global market.
